unique cast bronze and oak wood paperweight fabricated to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of ernest flagg’s singer tower (1897-1908), located at 149 broadway street, new york city, ny.
the paperweight is a replica of the building’s bronze window cleaner safety anchors and was made using bronze from the lobby’s original elevator doors and trimwork discarded during renovations when automatic elevators were installed in 1957-59 to comply with modern building codes.
the building was demolished in 1969 to make way for the u.s. steel building (later known as one liberty plaza) was built on the site and completed in 1973.
