six matching original and unrestored early 20th century antique american interior residential stamped brass metal "como" pattern doorknob backplates designed and manufactured by the p. & f. corbin co., new britain, ct. the passage door escutcheons are comprised of wrought brass with a nicely aged oxidized copper-plated finish. each wrought brass thimble is tightly affixed to the backside of the escutcheon. several sets available. the "como" knobs and backplates were salvaged from a chicago wood-frame residence built around 1910. the p. & f. corbin hardware company originated in 1849 when brothers philip and frank corbin and edward doen established the firm of doen, corbin & co. in new britain, ct. at this point in their infancy they solely manufactured ox balls. shortly after, in 1851, the company's name changed to the p. & f. corbin company. by 1868 corbin's catalog of builders' hardware was greatly expanded and the hardware company saw rapid growth thereafter. by the beginning of the 20th century, corbin was one of the leading hardware manufacturers in the world. priced for the lot. the backplates measure 2.5 x 7.75 inches.
