hard to find intact privy dug c. early 1870's medium aqua blue soda bottle manufactured for chicago bottler daniel dempsey. the high, tapering shoulders are finished with a short neck and applied oval-blobtop that remains intact except for a single small chip at the lip edge. the front body is embossed "d.dempsey / chicago / ills". on the reverse, above the heel, the maker's mark is embossed in unusually large lettering, "w.mcc & co". the smooth base is centrally embossed "dd". seams evidence manufacture in a cup bottom mold. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including minor surface wear, irridization, whittling, and bubbles. this variation dates to the early years of daniel dempsey and thomas hennessey's partnership. daniel dempsey is listed in the 1880 census as a 50-year old soda water manufacturer. he was in a partnership with thomas hennessey from 1872-1881, but he never appears in city directories as sole owner of a bottling company during the post-civil war period. although dempsey and hennessey were partners for nine years, they only produced a single "d&h" embossed bottle style before hennessey bought out dempsey's interest and continued alone for a few years after 1882. daniel dempsey again appeared in business in 1884 when he formed a soda and small-beer bottling partnership with cornelius ryan.
