original and intact late 1850's-1860's pontiled yellow olive pint shaped mineral water bottle with applied sloping collar and ring. the squat body and sloping shoulders are finished with a short neck and applied tapered double collar. the base has a kickup retaining residue from the iron pontil. the front body exhibits a clean strike in the form of embossed block lettering, "hopkins/ chalybeate / baltimore". crudities are typical of age and date of manufacture, including seeding, surface wear, or discoloration. chalybeate waters are mineral spring waters containing salts of iron, and have been regarded for centuries to have health-giving properties. according to an 1858 publication, the water in these bottles were obtained from a well on william hopkins farm in baltimore county, maryland, and had been extensively used by invalids for nearly two years, acquiring great reknown as a curative in dyspepsia, loss of appetite, indigestion, extreme debility, and various other health conditions.
