remarkable late 19th century ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace summer cover complete with original matching surround. the original brass-plated finish remains largely intact. the cover features a costumed woman lying against a tree surrounded by intricately designed leafage in deep relief. the matching cast iron surround is adorned with fanciful and fluid, foliated scrollwork with a centrally located human head containing detailed facial features. both surround and cover were fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. salvaged from an upscale st. louis residence undergoing demolition. measures 30 1/4 x 24 1/4 inches.
