exceptional 19th century antique american victorian era ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace summer cover designed and patented by cornelius braun of louisville, ky. the detailed figural summer cover features a centrally located bust-length female contained within an oval-shaped cartouche with a surrounding sunburst design motif. the outer edges contain extravagant interplay comprised of deeply embossed scrollwork and leafage. the slightly recessed central panel is detachable from the larger surround. the original copper-plated finish remains partially intact. the original scalloped handle remains intact and free from damage. salvaged from a c. 1870's chicago graystone residence undergoing demolition. the summer cover was fabricated by scanlan & co., louisville, ky. measures 25 3/4 x 20 1/8 inches.
