single all original (1860's-70's) privy dug medium aqua blue or teal pony style soda bottle with applied blob top manufactured for chicago bottlers august, william, and frederick lang. embossed low on the front of the body is the bottlers' name and city, "lang bros / chicago." the squat body, high shoulders and neck are finished with an applied blob top. the bottle features allover irridization in the form of a white and rainbow patination. most commonly, bottles with this mark seem to date from the 1870's and 1880's, but the mark was probably in use at least from around the start of the civil war, perhaps a bit earlier. at the smooth, flat base are large block letters centrally embossed, "l.b.r". the glass features crudities typical of its age and date of manufacture, including bubbles, surface wear, and discoloration. according to chicago city directories, the lang brothers set up two different, sequential, companies to bottle mineral water and soda water between 1868 and 1878. the first attempt was in 1868 by brothers august and william. they were listed in the 1868 cd as "mineral water manufacturers" at 171 n. clark. by 1869, william had joined john c. meier as a vinegar maker and august is unlisted. in 1870, august and frederick began a second lang bros. soda and mineral water bottling operation at 268 wells. this business venture was a more successful one, and the two brothers were bottling partners until 1878, after which frederick c. lang took over and ran the bottling works on his own. during the lang brothers' 1870 partnership, they were variously characterized as "soda water" or "mineral water" manufacturers. in 1875, they moved their bottling operation from 268 wells to 50-60 pearson.
