c. 1892 original ornamental cast bronze interior office door backplate and monogrammed doorknob salvaged from the oregonian building demolished during the 1950's. the monogrammed doorknob contains the morning oregonian's initials surrounded by a simple crenellated border. the fanciful backplate contains the union shield with covered wagon, sailing vessels animal life, etc. the very top features an american eagle. the richarson-romanesque style oregonian building was built in 1892. fire insurance maps indicate this building was 133 feet to the main roof, not including the prominent clock tower at the corner of sw alder street and 6th avenue. the main section of the building stood 9 floors, and the tower added 4 additional stories - one behind the clock face. the reid brothers designed this building from their offices in san francisco in 1892. the oregonian building was the first steel-frame building constructed in the western u.s. the massive clock was fabricated by e. howard & co. of boston, ma. the clock pendulum was 9 feet long and weighed 100 pounds alone. the building's rooftop was used to gather temperatures and rainfall data for u.s. army signal corps from october 1892 until june 1902. the tower was demolished in the early 1950's by the cleveland wrecking co.
