four nearly identical and remarkably intact privy dug aqua hutchinson soda bottles manufactured for chicago bottlers dempsey & ryan. the squat shoulders and neck are finished with applied blob tops, and each bottle contains the remnant of the patented hutchinson spring stopper (in varying degrees of intactness). embossed vertically on the glass is the bottler's name and place of manufacture. surface wear and discoloration from being buried evident. crudities are consistent with age and date of manufacture, including casewear on the embossing, slight whittling, and bubbles. according to an 1886 city directory dempsey & ryan manufactured soda and seltzer water, and operated at 187 w. 18th street. only two available.
