c. 1890's original antique american ornamental cast iron interior chicago commercial building or hotel elevator signal lantern designed and fabricated by or for the elevator supply & repair company or the winslow brothers foundry, chicago, il. the exact chicago building from which the elevator lantern was salvaged from is not known at this time. research for identifying the building in progress. the finely cast lantern houses two sockets and at one point in time contained two glass globes. the signal lantern was configured to notify passengers of an elevator cab moving "up" or "down" when called. the glass ball-shaped globes were likely white with one containing a red source of illumination. the body or socket housing contains richly ornate acanthus leaves along the top and bottom. the curvaceous protruding arm features intricate gothic elements and sullivanesque style leafage. the unornamented backplate is comprised of cast iron with two opposed holes for mounting flush against the wall. the elevator indicator lamp was no doubt salvaged from an important chicago building.
