late 19th century antique american hand-painted odd fellows ceremonial wood warden's axe discovered in a southern ohio lodge. representing the emblem of pioneering, the axe was used in many lodges to collect donations for the needy and distressed. donations were placed on the side containing the expressive "heart in hand" (denotes candor, frankness, sincerity). the opposite side contains the "all-seeing eye" above an elaborate shield flanked by costumed figures. the three primary principals (i.e., friendship, love & truth) are written along the bottom edge. the original polychrome enameled finish is original and intact. allover crazing consistent with age. remarkable american folk art piece.
