late 1940's vintage american industrial intact cast steel flush mount "explosion proof" indoor/outdoor electric wall sconce designed and fabricated by the crouse-hinds company, syracuse, ny. the reinforced single electric light fixture was mounted above a fire alarm call box in an old munitions factory. the socket housing is comprised of solid steel with partially intact galvanized (i.e., zinc coating). the threaded end aluminum bulb guard cage is made of aluminum. the impact resistant ruby red glass bulb guard has a lightly embossed crouse-hinds logo. the original adjustable and/or detachable sheet steel reflector is perfectly intact. three matching units available. crouse-hinds electric company, a manufacturer of high grade electrical specialties, was established in 1894 in syracuse, new york. they later shortened their name to crouse-hinds company and beginning in the early 1920's specialized in the manufacture of traffic signals, controllers and accessories. measures 11 x 5 x 5 inches.
