single c. 1900's original interior residential box-shaped varnished oak wood newel post likely fabricated by or for the foster-munger company, chicago, il. the freestanding interior residential staircase landing newel post contains intricately designed gesso or composition neoclassical style ornament, in the form of ornamental laurel wreaths, ribbons and scrollwork. remarkably, the gesso applique remains in great overall condition, considering age. the oak wood newel post was salvaged from a south side chicago graystone undergoing demolition. measures at its base 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 and 50 inches in height. top portion is 9 x 9 inches
