very unique c. 1945 original "red devil" pictorial paint can originally containing a heat and weatherproof black paint. the quart-sized steel can with original vibrantly colored paper label was found tucked away in a shuttered elevator machine room in the richman brothers building. the well-maintained paint can features a devil grasping a pitchfork with a wall of surrounding flames. the paint can was made by or for the elliot paint and varnish company, chicago, ills. founded in in 1897, elliot paint rapidly evolved into a full paint and varnish manufacturer well into the 20th century. the company was acquired by valspar during the 1970's.
