early 1930's strong and sturdy stationary four-legged low-lying hospital furniture table base designed and fabricated by the chicago hardware foundry company, chicago, il. the chicago-based foundry fabricated a vast assortment of vitreous enameled cast iron furniture for hospitals, schools, soda fountains and other commerical establishments beginning in the early 20th century. the side table base contains four matching cabriole style cast iron legs with the original highly desirable mint green porcelain enameled "sani" finish intact. the pressed and folded undershelf and steel stretchers contain a uniform black paint finish. the tabletop was likely comprised of a thick vitrolite (i.e., pigmented glass) slab that was secured tightly to the base. more often than not, the tabletops were damaged or outright discarded, despite their strength and stability. measures 42 x 19 x 24 inches.
