original c. 1917-18 antique american industrial seldom found refinished cast iron "universal" wallace table saw base with detachable top and original manually adjusted spoked wheels

completely refinished early 20th century american antique industrial heavy duty cast iron mobile "universal" table saw designed and fabricated by the j. d. wallace company, chicago, il. the largely intact table saw can by repurposed into a variety of furniture pieces for the home or workplace. the detachable steel platform leaves a robust cast iron four-legged interconnected base for use with a newly added tabletop, etc.the wallace saw retains the original manually adjusted spoked handles or wheels located on two sides of the machine. the heavy duty rollers or casters are concealed within the outswept or protruding iron hoods. the base with uprights and stretchers are interconnected with machine screws. the exterior has been thoroughly cleaned, brushed down to bare metal, and treated with a clear coat finish. great overall condition, considering age. the john d. wallace company was established on october 27, 1916. by 1919 the name had "& co." appended to it. the company's first product was a jointer. wallace and company quickly added other machines including bandsaws, tablesaws, scrollsaws, drills, and combination machines. the machines were small but solidly built, and represent perhaps the first line of motor-driven woodworking machines designed for home-shop use. the company was dissolved in 1957. measures 27 x 27 x 36 inches.
