one of a small assortment of single well-maintained all original c. 1890's flush mount ornamental black enameled salvaged chicago cast iron floor registers designed and fabricated by the tuttle & bailey mfg., co., new york city, ny. the exceptionally ornate and fully functional "lattice pattern" floor grate retains the original border or surround. the multiple louvers are controlled by a threaded lever or "thumb" wheel. the grate and matching surround were salvaged from a chicago house undergoing demolition. several wall and floor grates were carefully removed from the house. measures 13 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches
