single original purple colored conical-shaped or "cone" ink well unearthed from a residential privy "vault" or pit located on a chicago demolition site. the mouth-blown two-leaf mold ink cone contains a smooth base with no manufacturer markings. the salvaged ink well has been lightly cleaned, but not tumbled. traces of dried ink provide added color and character to the glass vessel. the diminutive ink well was fabricated by several bottlers. sanford's ink wells are the most frequently found in the privy pits we have discovered. the chicago-based company sanford ink was supposedly established in 1858, but few early bottles from this company are known. in 1900, the company suffered a huge loss due to fire, which cost estimates of losses put at $125,000. the original principals in the company were the sanford brothers, whose fledging business w. h. redington, turned into a huge operation. william sanford and frederick redington began operations in chicago in 1866.
