rare and intact late nineteenth century vibrant light blue green fruit jar for countertop display of confections. the front body is embossed in caseworn lettering, "candy bros / mfg. / confectioners / st. louis mo." with the last line curving upward slightly. the tall cylindrical jar has high shoulders and a short neck with a wide bore and a tooled squared finish. seams run to the base of the neck, and the base is smooth. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, and irridization or discoloration are typical of having been dug. the candy bros. mfg. was a family confectioner company started in the 1870's by brothers robert, thomas, and sydney candy. they were known for their vitamin tablets, butter cups, and cough drops. their glass confectioner bottles with the company's embossed name are also sought after by antique advertising collectors. the candy brothers products included tablets in over 40 flavors, such as barley sugar, blood orange, iceland moss, honey coconut, tolu rock and rye, and red currant drops.
