original and intact 1880's antique american ornamental cast iron bridge truss date plaque in the form of a shield with design motifs surrounding the mounting holes

sought after c. 1880's antique american oversized salvaged industrial solid cast iron flush mount bridge truss shield plaque attributed to the king iron bridge & manufacturing company, cleveland, oh. the single-sided dated plaque was carefully extracted from an old truss bridge located near cleveland in ohio. the shield contains the date of the bridge's construction accentuated by an elegantly designed star motif. the cast iron plaque has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. traces of the original primer evident. the salvaged bridge plaque measures 16 x 16 inches. the king iron bridge & manufacturing company was a late-19th-century bridge building company located in cleveland, ohio. it was founded by zenas king (1818–1892) in 1858 and subsequently managed by his sons, james a. king and harry w. king and then his grandson, norman c. king, until the mid-1920's. many of the bridges built by the company were used during america's expansion west in the late 19th century and early 20th century, and some of these bridges are still standing today.
