original 19th century antique american salvaged chicago marbleized slate fireplace mantel with lightly incised design motifs accentuated with gold leaf

original 1870's-1880's antique american interior residential marbleized slate mantel possibly fabricated by the c.b. evans mantel and grate company, cincinnati, oh. the hand-painted "faux" marble finish applied to slate was salvaged from a chicago cottage constructed around sometime between 1875-1885. the hearth and jambs contain lightly incised floral design motifs accentuated with the original gold leaf enamel inlay. the beveled edge mantel shelf remains in great overall condition, considering age. the fireplace mantel includes the opposed wall segments, inner segments (used to enclose the firebox opening) and two black beveled edge blocks that divided the frieze panel from the jambs. these parts are not shown, but contain the same marbleized treatment and are free from damage. metal anchors and plaster left untouched. measures approximately 52 x 5 1/2 x 44 1/2. inner firebox is approximately 31 inches wide x 34 inches high.
