original 1830 hand-painted detroit fire department leather fire bucket with allover crazing and original drop handle

intact and historically important c. 1830 (dated) antique american industrial detroit fire department lightweight painted leather fire bucket fabricated by or for the city of detroit fire department. the hand-painted fire bucket contains the department's initials (the city was founded in 1806) at the very bottom. the polychromatic bucket features allover crazing. the red, black and gilded paint finish remains amazingly intact, considering age. the oversized leather drop handle is original to the bucket. the early american fire bucket was likely used in a leather bucket brigade for handling fires with the use of water or sand.
