original fully functional american depression era "irradiation" light therapy floor lamp reconfigured as a reading lamp. the adjustable height light therapy floor lamp was designed and manufactured by sperti sunlamp inc., cincinnati, oh. the machine age streamlined style floor lamp features an unusual boomerang-shaped weighted cast iron base with a brushed metal finish. the fully adjustable refinished steel telescoping or extension rod remains in good working condition. the unusually shaped and deeply grooved "clam-shell" reflector is comprised of reinforced aluminum. the curved arm containing the lamp head with socket housing can be tilted upward or downward. the reading lap has been brushed down to bare metal from top to bottom and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. two matching repurposed reading lamps are available. sperti sunlamps were first manufactured in 1933 with screw-in bulbs consisting of a tungsten filament and small mercury arc. the "reading" lamps were intended to provide the user with a full spectrum of healthful radiation for everyday chores. by 1937 the full spectrum bulbs were discontinued and replaced with lamps intended to produce a tan. this new product was called a "medium pressure arc lamp." company founder dr. sperti conducted research to generate developmental data to support his theory that increased vitamin d production in human skin results from exposure to ultraviolet radiation. each reading lamp or light is priced individually. shade measures 11 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches. base measures 13 x 12 1/2 inches. lamp is 62 inches high.
