c. 1910-20 original antique american medical adjustable height stationary stool with a bent steel four-legged base. the adjustable swivel seat stool with threaded steel rod contains a brushed mtetal finish sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the surgeon's stool was manufactured by the sharp & smith co., specializing in surgical instruments, deformity apparatus and surgeons' appliances. the fanciful cabriole style tubular legs are reinforced with an x-brace support system consisting of interlocking solid steel rods. salvaged from the old michael reese hospital "main" building (demolished in 2011). the base measures approximately 13 1/2 x 13 1/2. The height ranges from 22 to 27 inches with a seat diameter 12 inches.
