original hard to find 19th century american victorian era ornamental cast bronze figural doorknob featuring a costumed roman or greek soldier. likely dates to around 1880. earlier versions were made of zinc or pewter with a copper clad finish. fabricated by the russell & erwin mfg. co., new britain, ct. the solider portrait is surrounded by a neogrec border (popular design motif used during this period). nicely aged surface patina. contains a footed shank. expected surface wear. measures approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter.
