single worn and weathered 19th century antique american industrial "white lead" paint keg or barrel manufactured by or for the st. louis lead & oil company, st. louis, mo. the c. 1890's barrel is comprised of oak wood staves bound tightly together with a combination of wrought iron and wood hoops. manufacturer markings found on the barrel's topside lid. white lead paint contained lead, a heavy metal, that was used as a pigment, with lead(ii) chromate (pbcro4, "chrome yellow") and lead(ii) carbonate(pbco3, "white lead") being the most common. lead was added to paint to speed drying, increase durability, retain a fresh appearance, and resist moisture that causes corrosion. lead-based paint was banned in household paint beginning in 1978. the keg measures 14 x 18 inches.
