rare original and intact mid-1860's medium emerald porter bottle manufactured for william coughlan. the full body and low rounded shoulders are finished with a long, narrow neck and applied rounded tapered collar, or blobtop. the finish features heavy whittling and some bubbles. embossed on the upper body, just below the shoulder is "w. coughlan / baltimore". the bottle is intact and in good condition, with no cracks or chips and little haze or discoloration. the smooth base and strong side seams evidence manufacture with a two leaf mold. william coughland operated a prolific bottling business from 1842-1874, at 169 & 171 central avenue.
