rare original c.1859-1860 aqua blue glass iron pontiled blobtop soda bottle fabricated for francis schonwald in chicago, il. the sloping shoulders and long neck taper into an applied blobtop finish that exhibits exceptional crudity i the form of whittling and slop, as well as stretch marks at the neck below. the front body is embossed crisply, "franz schonwald / premium / mineral water / chicago ill". at the base is a smooth, rounded kickup from manufacture with iron pontil, with no traces of graphite. side seams evidence use of a two leaf mold. crudities are consistent with its age and date of manufacture, including minor surface wear and discoloration at the lip edge. francis schonwald is first listed in chicago city directories as a druggist at 354 1/2 state in 1856. the 1865 directory notes that he arrived to chicago from prussia in 1851. in 1859 and 1860 schonwald is listed as a mineral water manufacturer and a soda water manufacturer from his residence at 16 s. halsted. the "franz" instead of francis embossed on this later bottle appears to have been a glass-house error. francis schonwald does not appear in city directories after 1860 and sometime during the season likely sold his bottling business to louis rodemeyer, a chicago brewer and saloonkeeper. measures 7 1/2 inches high.
