rare lightly cleaned original industrial early twentieth century medium-sized steam pressure gauge designed for the grinnell company in rhode island by the schaffer and budenberg manufacturing company in england. the circular gauge contains a nicely aged gold-painted cast brass bevel with a sunken clear glass face protecting the instrument's face. a crescent style indicator arrow measures the psi gauge from 0 to 60, and the face is printed with central text that include both company names. the backside of the two-part steam gauge is comprised of cast iron. the gauge is threaded into to a length of painted pipe and includes a brass thumb-turn handle. the schaffer & budenberg manufacturing company was founded in 1850 to produce pressure gauges, thermometers, valves and manifolds. in 1849, b. schaffer patented the design of a diaphragm pressure gauge, and within a year formed a business partnering with his brother-in-law. they remained in business through world war 1, and remained a family business until 1991. the gauge is one of several salvaged from the 1871 crane mfg. company factory at 154-166 north jefferson street. measures 16 x 1 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches
