rare privy dug early twentieth century hutchinson style blobtop soda bottle manufactured for chicago bottlers swidler & bernstein. the slim, tall body is finished with a short neck and intact applied oval blobtop. the front body is heavily embossed, but caseworn, reading "swidler & bernstein / 1527-1529 / flournoy st / chicago / contents 8 fl oz.". on the reverse is the logo of a walking bear, and surrounding embossed text, "trade mark / registered / this bottle / never sold". crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including whittling and bubbles. discoloration and haze are typical of having been dug. swidler and bernstein were russian immigrants who arrived in chicago around the 1890's, and began manufacturing soda, mineral water, ginger ale, and root beer around the turn of the century. city directories place them at 1527 york street in 1912, but they soonafter erected a new building at 1415 w. 12th st and moved their operations.
