c. 1908-10 ornamental cast brass interior guest room door hardware salvaged from the old blackstone hotel located on the corner of michigan avenue and balbo street in chicago. the french renaissance style hardware was fabricated by the yale & towne mfg. co., stamford, ct. the heavily detailed oval-shaped doorknobs feature a large rooster surrounded by a bayleaf border. the nicely aged patina varies slightly from one piece to the next. the 290-foot 21-story marshall and fox-designed blackstone hotel was built from 1908 to 1910. the hotel was named for timothy blackstone, a notable chicago business executive and politician, who served as the founding president of the union stock yards, president of the chicago and alton railroad and mayor of la salle, illinois. the hotel's exterior and interior are considered an excellent example of both neoclassical beaux-arts and french second empire architecture. backplates measure approximately 11 1/4 x 3 inches and doorknobs measure3 x 1 3/4 inches.
