original c. 1950's american vintage medical adjustable height hospital operating room "mayo stand" salvaged from the old cook county hospital. the fully functional stand retains the original detachable rolled rim stainless steel instrument tray. the telescoping upright and two-legged u-shaped stand are comprised of tubular steel with a polished chrome finish. hardened plastic dial and casters original and intact. likely fabricated by the shampaine co., st. louis, mo. the mayo stand was developed by william and charles mayo for the sake of the medical student as operative onlookers, who crowded william and charle surgical suites. the one-legged, mobile instrument stands were designed to best accommodate a surgical arena in which floor space was tight.
