late 19th century original and fully functional freestanding american victorian era outdoor ornamental cast iron chicago stoop handrail support bracket fabricated by south-western architectural iron works, chicago, il. the bracket or baluster originally supported a tubular hollow steel rail affixed to cast iron newel posts at the base of the stoop. the bracket contains pre-drilled holes (on each corner of the baseplate) for anchoring into the stone or concrete tread. richly ornamented with foliated scrollwork, berries, etc. uniform black enameled finish. measures approximately 13 x 14 inches.
