intact and all original antique c. 1850's -early 1860's dug iron pontiled deep aqua blue pony soda bottle with blobtop manufactured for bottlers howell & smith, of buffalo, new york. the slim body tapers directly into a slim neck with a crude applied blobtop that exhibits whittling, slop and some irridization on the neck directly below the finish. the front body is embossed in large open-lined lettering with the bottler's names and beneath in smaller text, "buffalo". the dug bottle features some minor surface wear and discoloration. it has not been tumbled, so appears somewhat hazy. john howell was in business in buffalo from 1841 until his death in 1888. he began as a employee of burr & waters, started his own company making soda and sarsaparilla with a gentlemen by the name of smith and began his own business around the civil war. he was recognized throughout the country as a leader among soda and mineral water manufacturers. his firm then continued under the auspices of his sons.
