completely intact c. 1920's american art deco streamlined style illuminated bi-color elevator lobby directional (i.e., up/down) lantern salvaged from the downtown chicago conway building. the machine age wall-mount lantern contains a cast bronze frame or enclosure featuring three grooved rings used to support the two matching bent white opalescent glass panels. each section contains two low-watt sockets with colored light bulbs (e.g., red and green, or in some cases blue) indicating the arrival of an up or down traveling elevator car. the annunciator signal lanterns were likely installed between 1920-30. the exact fabricator is not known. the conway building was developed by the marshall field estate, and named after conway, massachusetts - the birthplace of marshall field. the 22-story white terra cotta-clad neoclassical style building was completed in 1914. the architectural firm was d.h. burnham & co., with frederick p. dinkelberg as principal designer. the extant building was later renamed the burnham center. measures 5 x 4 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches.
