all original late 1920's american interior residential wall-mount "automatic fireman on the wall" ruby red glass grenade

well-maintained c. 1929 ceiling-mount "shur-stop" fire "grenade" fabricated by the international fire equipment corp., staten island, ny. the "automatic fireman on the wall" was intended to be thrown against burning objects, and thereby broken, releasing a fire extinguishing liquid. the gourd-shaped grenade is comprised of clear glass with original applied and/or dipped ruby red enameled finish. the fire extinguishing liquid contained within each orb is water or carbon tetrachlorid. the grenade is cradled within a bent brass rod bracket with hook. the colorful enameled steel manufacturer plaques or badges remain intact. the orb and bracket was designed and patented by wilhelm a. bronhander of montclair, nj. several matching wall and ceiling mount grenades were salvaged from a sprawling highland park mansion built in 1929. the majority of the hanging grenades were discovered in the attic and basement. each bedroom was equipped with a wall-mounted grenade. light crazing or sporadic loss of paint evident. the badges and brackets are in nearly pristine condition. measures approximately 7 inches tall with a 4 inch diameter.
