late 19th or early 20th century slightly worn and weathered american industrial gymnasium "dumbell" or possibly an exercise device used for similar purposes. the unusual turned and tapered solid wood weight contains a nicely crazed polychrome enameled finish. the deeply recessed handle or handgrip between conical-shaped sides contains wear consistent with age. the exercise component is attributed to the fred medart mfg. co., st. louis, mo. measures 25 x 4 x 4 inches.
