unusually large late 19th or early 20th century box-shaped cast ornamental iron commercial building freestanding newel post with several recessed panels

single turn of the century amercian antique frestanding box-shaped refinished cast iron oversized newel post designed and fabricated by the dearborn foundry, chicago, il. the ornamental iron newel post was salvaged from a chicago factory administration office building demolished long ago. the cap likely contained a large ball finial. the base plate does have chipped corners. the heavy industrial newel post contains deeply recessed allover sunken or recessed panels. the corners of the top cap are accentuated with simple floral motifs. the newel post has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. measures 8 x 8 x 49 3/4 inches.
