original and intact american industrial mobile compartmentalized heavy gauge steel combination dresser and pull-out desk designed and fabricated by the simmons mfg. co., kenosha, wisc. the highboy dresser contains a brushed metal finish that has been sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the pressed and folded depression era metal dresser was likely designed by albert witike in the late 1920's or early 1930's. the four turned and tapered pedestal style legs are structurally sound and stable. the original pressed steel drawer pulls or knobs are in great condition. the pressed steel bassick casters are original and in great working condition. the third drawer is hinged and simply drops down, exposing a pull-out steel writing "desk" with recessed cup for an ink bottle. the upright cabinet retains the original circular label (often found on the interior left side side of the top drawer). simmons specialized in metal bed frame fabrication primarily for hospitals, hotels and other commercial settings. surface wear evident. a large assortment of cabinets, chairs, benches and other simmons furniture was salvaged from a south side chicago hospital. measures 32 x 19 x 49 inches.
