remarkably designed and well-executed late 19th or early 20th century heavily ornamented cast bronze residential entrance door backplate designed and fabricated by the reading hardware company, reading, pa. the highly detailed rococo style "belfort" pattern backplate contains a single protruding collar or thimble, along with two keyholes. later or alternative versions contain the circular-shaped opening for cylinder locks. the oversized backplate has been refinished and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the swinging keyhole cover is completely intact. backplate measures 2 3/4 x 12 inches.
