louis r. bostwick (1868 - 1943) photographed the people and events of omaha for more than 40 years. he worked for the weekly illustrated bee newspaper before opening his own photography studio in 1905. bostwick took pride in producing clear photos with amazing detail, and did not care for artistic, foggy, blurry, or candid shots. to get the best detail, he used a large 8x10 view camera for all his photographs. when bostwick died, he had 70,000 negatives in his office files. this photobook, entitled 'an afternoon in a city of opportunity: omaha, usa' documents many of the marvels of omaha in 1916. the title on the cover has been inked by hand, and a majority of the 31 gelatin silver prints are accompanied by a handwritten notation of their location. the final photograph is a self-portrait of the artist himself.
