vintage c. 1950's american industrial bright yellow enameled heavy gauge steel "dept. 34" commercial grade trash receptacle fabricated by the solar-sturges mfg. co., chicago, il. the lightly worn metal can contains black stenciled lettering displayed prominently along the front. the detachable round top features a heavy gauge stainless steel contoured, spring hinged and self-closing door with the word "push" in lightly incised lettering. the cylindrical-shaped can with two embossed rings was salvaged from a chicago area tool & die factory. the solar-sturges company is a consolidation of the solar metal products company, of columbus, and the sturges-burh mfg. co., of chicago. solar-sturgis was well known in the dairy, ice cream manufacture, and architectural fields, being one of the largest manufacturers of ice cream and milk cans in the world and ranking well up in the matter of manufactures of fireproof doors, partitions, etc. measures 13 x 33 inches.
