single early 20th century antique american mission style residential ornamental cast iron mailbox with a mostly uniform black enameled finish over metal. the residential flush mount mail box was designed and fabricated between 1910-20 by the h.b. ives co., new haven, conn. the compact mail box retains the original tin panel affixed to the backside. the hinged lid chute cover with lockable hasp opens and closes with ease. the topmost slot was used by the mail carrier for inserting mail. the small grille or peephole, composed of triangular shapes, would indicate whether the box contained mail. three nearly identical mail boxes were salvaged from chicago homes undergoing demolition. measures 5 3/4 x 2 3/4 x 11 1/2 inches.
