original and remarkably rare late 19th century american industrial "kingsbury" hotel room emergency fire escape portable device with original lithographed tin canister

SKU: UR-27433-18
intact antique american industrial single hotel room portable fire-escape self-contained boxed kit featuring a descending cord, hooks and hand grip tightly packed in an amazingly detailed lithographed tin box containing several instructional graphics. the cord, which is was designed to be longer than the distance from the elevation at which the escape is to be utilized to the ground, is comprised of a central core of cotton with steel wires tightly twisted together. the original threaded steel rod double hook with open and close eyes remains intact. the gripping handle is formed of two pieces of metal that are held together by two screw that pass through the parts from opposite sides near their upper ends.the incredibly intact pieces contain a longitudinal groove or cord-track with a tongue on one side and a tongue-groove on the other side of the cord groove or track. the cord is "caught" by bent open loops of the hook (from which it cannot free itself after once being hooked) so as to form a sliding noose, that in an emergency (i.e., fire), can be bent or caught around anything handy in the room sufficiently large, so that it could not be pulled through the window, but will afford a hold or support for the end of the cord while the person is descending downward. the free end of the cord may be thrown out of the window whereby the individual utilizing the escape may grasp the gripping-handle with both hands and allow himself to slide slowly down. in order to support himself, the individual would grip the handle with a naturally exerted force proportional to the amount of his weight, cause the parts of the handle to be forced together, so as to grip or bite the cord with sufficient tension to hold him/her and prevent slipping down too rapidly. various features of the compact "kit" were patented by george wells root and george l. kingsbury for g.l. kingsbury & co., hartford, ct., manufacturers and proprietors of portable fire escapes. the components have never been used. the "new old stock" kit dates to the late 1890's.
