original lightly tumbled pre-civil war era chicago privy-dug cobalt blobtop soda bottle manufactured for chicago bottler george lomax. the bottle has a squat body and low tapering shoulders blending into a short neck, and is finished with an intact applied blob top. the front body is embossed "g. lomax / chicago." it features a shallow kickup with no trace of iron residue. the body features several large bubbles, including a vertical bubbles that goes through the embossed lettering. crudities typical of its age and date of manufacture include whittling and minor surface wear. george lomax settled in chicago in 1856 with his father john a. lomax, where the latter established one of the first soda water factories in the midwest. he succeeded his father and built up one of the largest establishments in the country. he was instrumental in organizing the chicago consolidated bottling company, which at the time was one of the largest concerns devoted to the manufacture of soda water anywhere. george lomax retired from active business in 1914 and his son george jr. became head of the company. the name "lomax" is intimately associated with the history and growth of the city of chicago.
