original crude c. 1842-1846 deep emerald "philly green" porter style glass bottle manufactured in kensington, pa. the squat body and rounded shoulders are finished with a long neck and applied tapered collar with single ring that exhibits heavy slop and whittling. low on the front body is embossed "kensington". on the reverse the contents are embossed centrally, "brown stout". the base has a deep kickup with some traces from the iron pontil. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including allover whittling, seeding, and some surface scratches. the kensington glassworks manufactured beer bottles, with markings on the front of the bottle. henry seybert, a wealthy chemist and investor, rented one of the closed dyottville factories in 1842, primarily to manufacture soda bottles for eugene roussel. he listed the factory as the kensington glass works in a philadelphia directory. the works were sold to benners, smith and campbell, who operated it as the dyottville glass works in 1846.
