very unique and unusual late 19th century american antique victorian era ornamental cast iron interior residential figural summer cover designed and fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. the deeply embossed detachable panel features a herd of deer surrounded by dense foliage. the centrally located panel is slightly recessed against a fully enclosed frame featuring intricate leafage and a dimpled surface. the ornamental outer surround was originally mounted flush against the firebox opening. the original "japanned" or baked black enameled finish remains intact. measures 30 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches.
