late 19th or early 20th century chicago drugstore polychromed cast iron countertop druggists weighing scale with oversized wrought brass scoop

original turn of the century ornamental cast iron chicago drugstore weighing scale possibly designed and fabricated by or for henry troemner, philadelphia, pa. the intricately designed mechanical countertop pharmacy or apothecary scale contains a lightly incised cast brass scale beam with a single painted cast iron weight. the large wrought brass scoop or pan is detachable from the balance's cast iron bracketed left arm. the right arm contains the more traditional pan where standard masses of known weight are placed. the fully functional balance contains a black enameled finish accentuated with red and gold pinstriping. salvaged from an old chicago family pharmacy that opened in 1890.
