largely intact late 1880's american eastlake darkly varnished oak wood residential boxed newel post with chamfered edges

original c. 1887-89 american eastlake style carved oak wood interior residential staircase boxed newel post recently salvaged from a chicago three-flat residence undergoing renovation. the solid hardwood landing newel post was likely fabricated by palmer, fuller & co., chicago, il. an early electrolier or possibly a gasolier was mounted atop the hexagonal-shaped "cap" containing a pre-drilled hole for pipe and/or conduit. the top portion contains deeply carved elaborate floral motifs in the form of built-up molding applied to the central post. the vertical chamfered edges are highlighted with tight clusters of deeply incised horizontal lines. the plinth block base is original and intact. darkly varnished finish original. structurally sound and stable. measures 8 1/2 x 8 x 51 1/2 inches.
