historically important oversized lincoln memorial building (1909) polychromatic glazed terra cotta panel sculpted by kristian schneider for the american terra cotta company, crystal lake, il.
the hand-applied polychromatic glazed terra cotta panel was created as a promotional tool (displayed in their downtown chicago office located in d.h. burnham's 21-story peoples gas and light and coke company building) to showcase their technical mastery over polychromatic glazing—a complex process of applying multiple distinct colors to a single terra cotta piece before firing.
the scenic panel is comprised of several interlocking sections (each piece has a single shallow cavity without anchor hole), which demonstrated the company’s ability to maintain precise tolerances and structural integrity while managing the shrinkage that occurs during the kiln firing process.
the bottom right panel contains a lightly incised signature by the terra cotta comapny's renowned sculptor kristian schneider (1864–1935), who is perhaps most famous for his long-term collaboration with architect louis h. sullivan of the firm adler and sullivan.
